Note that the $(DXSDK_DIR) part references the environment variable that just expands to the path of your most recent SDK installation, for me this is ' C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft DirectX SDK (March 2009)\'. ' Project-> Properties->Configuration Properties->Linker->General->Additional Library Dependencies'. ' Project-> Properties->Configuration Properties->C/C++->General->Additional Include Directories' If you would rather set these paths on a per-project basis instead then, with your project open, you need to add the first path under: Now change the dropdown to view library file directories and add this path: "$(DXSDK_DIR)lib\x86". Under this interface change the Show-directories-for dropdown to view include file directories and add the following path: "$(DXSDK_DIR)include", without the quotes. To do it globally you need to navigate to: ' Tools->Options->Projects and Solutions->VC++ Directories'. Many people configure the paths globally to apply to all projects (although you can do it per-project if you'd rather). For a complete run-through, you need to first tell Visual Studio the paths to use when looking for headers and libraries and then tell it what to link against specifically.
